Overview
Registered in 2011, 'Beryl Black' is a small hosta cultivar of unusual parentage, with *Hosta* 'Krossa Regal' as its pod parent and an unknown pollen parent. The plant is visually distinctive for its blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on the undersides, medium green leaf margins, and a fast growth rate that produces an upright to mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Beryl Black' reaches a mature diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and a height of 14 inches (35.6 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its small size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Beryl Black' shows typical hosta resistance to deer, slug and snail damage may occur on the foliage, particularly in damp conditions.
