Overview
Registered in 2013 from an open-pollinated cross with *Hosta* 'Midas Touch' as the pod parent and an unknown pollen parent, 'Benji's Gold' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with gold margins. The cultivar is notable for its purple flower scapes, which contrast with the gold-edged foliage, and for the red-purple dotting that appears on the petioles.
In the Garden
'Benji's Gold' reaches a mature spread of approximately 25 inches (63.5 cm) and a height of 15 inches (38.1 cm), with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds. Its medium size makes it appropriate for mixed perennial plantings, though it is not compact enough for most containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Benji's Gold' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
