Overview
Registered in 1999 by J. Harrison and introduced by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Bengee' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. 'Tokudama'*. It is visually distinguished by its green leaves with yellowish gold, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside.
In the Garden
'Bengee' forms a mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, and its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rockeries. The blue-green scapes, which can reach 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height, provide vertical interest above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage; the slightly rippled leaf margins may offer minor resistance to slugs.
