Overview
Registered in 2015 as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta longipes*, 'Bellbird' is a small, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its unusually tall, slender scapes that rise well above the foliage. The plant forms an upright mound of ovate, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a light gloss on the upper surface, and a pronounced shine beneath.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 26 inches (66 cm) and height of 18 inches (46 cm), 'Bellbird' is suited for the front of a border, rock garden, or small woodland setting. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its upright habit and long scapes—reaching 37 to 40 inches (94 to 102 cm)—create vertical interest among lower-growing companions such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its compact size also makes it suitable for container culture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'Bellbird' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor foliage and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
