Overview

Registered in 2006 from a cross of two unnamed seedlings, *Hosta* 'Beer Belly Blues' is a large cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with slightly rippled margins and a deeply cupped form. The leaves are notably thick in substance, dull on both surfaces, and exhibit a pointed tip that causes the plant to stand upright, displaying both leaf faces.

In the Garden

This hosta reaches approximately 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height, with an upright habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size and substantial leaf substance make it suitable as a specimen plant in shaded borders or woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though monitoring may still be necessary in damp conditions; typical hosta-growing zones apply.
