Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Angel' registered in 2002, 'Beckoning' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its late-arriving lutescent center: the leaf blade emerges greenish yellow and gradually transitions to a medium blue-green, while the broad gold margins remain stable. The broadly ovate, slightly cupped leaves measure 13 inches long by 11 inches wide, with 16 vein pairs and a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Beckoning' reaches 21 inches in height and 31 inches in diameter, with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green margins and gold centers develop optimal contrast. The substantial leaf size and 38-inch scapes bearing near-white flowers make this cultivar suitable as a specimen or accent in woodland borders and mixed shade beds; its giant stature precludes container use.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard hosta precautions apply: monitor for slugs and snails, and protect from deer browsing in areas where these are prevalent.
