Overview
Registered in 2011, this small hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Neat Splash' and *H.* 'June'. Its most distinctive features are the bright, banana-yellow leaf centers bordered by medium green margins, combined with pink scapes that bear cherry-red seed pods, evoking the dessert for which it is named. The leaves are notably shiny on both surfaces and emerge folded, with the blades held upright from the clump in a manner that suggests the fruit's form.
In the Garden
Reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in both height and diameter, 'Banana Split' forms an upright to mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial shade to dappled light, where the yellow centers remain most vivid. Its small stature and compact habit make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. Pair with dark-leaved heucheras or blue-toned hostas for contrast.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard hosta precautions apply: monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the tender new foliage.
