Overview

Registered in 2014 by S. Andersen, 'Bamse' is a giant sport distinguished by its blue-green foliage with a distinctive mottled pattern of medium green overlaid with dark green, accompanied by slightly rippled margins. The leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, moderately corrugated, and display a dull upper surface with a glaucous bloom underneath, creating a notable contrast in color and texture.

In the Garden

'Bamse' forms a substantial mound, reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its large, textured leaves make it a suitable specimen for woodland gardens or as a focal point in shaded borders. The green scapes, ranging from 19 to 25 inches (48.3 to 63.5 cm) in height, bear flowers that complement the foliage without overpowering it.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Bamse' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
