Overview
Registered in 2009 from a seedling of unknown origin, 'Bam Bam Blue' is a large hosta distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage, heavy corrugation, and excellent color retention throughout the growing season. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 10.5 inches long and 9.5 inches wide, feature slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on the upper surface, and a dull underside, with 12 to 13 vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a semi-upright, vase-shaped clump reaching 29 inches in height and 39 inches in diameter, with blue-green scapes rising 32 to 35 inches. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial leaf substance and moderate to deep corrugation give it a robust presence in the border or as a specimen plant.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended, as both pests may damage the foliage.
