Overview
Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Baltimore Blues' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'Fragrant Blue' as its pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, nearly round leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and for the pronounced wave that runs through the center of each leaf.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, fast-growing mound reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its blue coloration is most pronounced in deeper shade. The substantial blue-green foliage provides strong textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, glaucous leaves are attractive to both pests.
