Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Oshima Silk', 'Baja White' was registered in 2010 and is distinguished by its small mound of intensely shiny, dark blue-green leaves that contrast sharply with white undersides. The ovate leaves, measuring 6 inches long and 4.5 inches wide, have flat dark green margins, a very shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath, with 9 to 11 vein pairs and a lightly wavy edge.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches a mature diameter of 28 inches (71.1 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), forming a dense, mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade and is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where its reflective foliage and white leaf backs can be appreciated. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, and other miniature hostas.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Baja White' shows typical hosta resistance to deer, it may be susceptible to slug damage; maintain clean garden debris and consider slug barriers if needed. Flowers appear on green scapes up to 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall in late season.
