Overview
Registered in 1991 by R. Davidson and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Bacchanal' is a small-sized variegated cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. nakaiana*. Its leaves feature dark green, undulated margins with a satiny sheen on the upper surface, contrasting with a lighter center, and are borne on plants of compact habit.
In the Garden
Reaching approximately 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter and 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height, 'Bacchanal' is suited to shaded or partially shaded borders, rock gardens, or the front of woodland beds. Its small stature and cordate, undulate leaves make it effective as a groundcover or in containers, where the satiny leaf texture is visible at close range. Companion plants may include ferns, *Heuchera*, or small *Carex* species that share similar moisture and light requirements.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
