Overview

Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, this small blue-green hosta forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter. 'Baby Blue' is distinguished by its ovate, lightly cupped leaves with tapered bases, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a slightly shiny upper surface; the leaf blade measures 5 inches (12.7 cm) long by 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide with 6 to 8 vein pairs and flat margins.

In the Garden

'Baby Blue' is suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its slow growth rate and small stature make it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings. Its compact size and blue foliage pair well with small ferns, heucheras, or other diminutive shade perennials. The plant is also well adapted to container cultivation, given its modest mature dimensions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Baby Blue' exhibits good leaf substance, standard precautions against slugs and deer are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
