Overview
Registered in 1999 from unknown parentage, 'Azure Mediterranean' is a small, mound-forming hosta distinguished by its heavily rippled, medium blue-green leaves with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces. The narrow, lance-shaped foliage, measuring 6 inches long and just 1 inch wide, creates a fine-textured, compact clump that contrasts with broader-leaved hostas.
In the Garden
Reaching 5 inches in height and 14 inches in diameter with a moderate growth rate, 'Azure Mediterranean' is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs effectively with smaller ferns, heucheras, or woodland groundcovers. The upright scapes, 21 to 27 inches tall, bear flowers above the low foliage, adding vertical interest.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The glaucous leaf coating is susceptible to slug damage; monitor regularly and manage as needed. Deer may browse the foliage, so protective measures are advisable in areas with high deer pressure.
