Overview
Registered in 1987 by K. Vaughn, this medium-sized hosta cultivar is a hybrid of *H.* 'Golden Waffles' (pod parent) and a seedling of *H.* 'Rough Waters' (pollen parent). 'Aztec Treasure' is visually distinctive for its green leaves with bright yellow-green margins, a color pattern that provides strong contrast throughout the growing season.
In the Garden
'Aztec Treasure' forms a mounded clump reaching approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with 10 to 13 vein pairs, and the bright yellow-green margins are most vivid when the plant receives morning sun or dappled light. Companion plants that thrive in similar conditions include ferns, heucheras, and shade-tolerant grasses. This cultivar is not recommended for container culture due to its medium size class.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Aztec Treasure' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for these pests and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
