Overview

Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Avalanche' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H.* 'Warwick Choice' as the pod parent. It is visually defined by its dark green leaves bearing broad, creamy white margins approximately 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, which are slightly rippled and contrast sharply with the darker center.

In the Garden

'Avalanche' forms a compact mound reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small stature makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants may include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials that complement its white-edged foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Avalanche' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
