Overview

Registered in 2003 by S. Tylinski, *Hosta* 'Augustus' is a small-sized cultivar derived from the pod parent *H.* 'Sea Fire' with an unknown pollen parent. Its distinguishing feature is a medium green leaf with a narrow (0.25 in / 0.6 cm), white, slightly rippled margin, combined with a very shiny surface on both sides.

In the Garden

'Augustus' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 11 in (27.9 cm) in height and 21 in (53.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its small stature and fine white edge make it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants might include small ferns or shade-tolerant groundcovers that do not overwhelm its modest scale.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, though the small leaf size may reduce attractiveness to some pests.
