Overview

Registered in 1984 by Kato and W. Zumbar, *Hosta* 'Asahi Sunray' is a miniature sport distinguished by its narrow, lanceolate leaves of emerald green with yellow-green margins. The foliage measures 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long and 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide, with three vein pairs, and the plant forms a compact mound 7 inches (17.8 cm) tall and 11 inches (27.9 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

'Asahi Sunray' is well suited to shaded or partially shaded borders, rock gardens, and troughs, where its diminutive size and fine-textured foliage provide contrast against broader-leaved perennials. The plant reaches a mature spread of approximately 11 inches (27.9 cm) and a height of 7 inches (17.8 cm), making it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera* cultivars, and dwarf *Carex* species.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
