Overview

Registered in 1984 by Kato and W. Zumbar, 'Asahi Comet' is a miniature sport distinguished by its narrow, lanceolate leaves of emerald green with sharply defined white margins. The foliage is glossy on the upper surface, with only two vein pairs per leaf, and the plant forms a compact mound reaching 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

This diminutive hosta is well suited to shaded rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a border, where its small scale and bright variegation provide contrast against darker foliage or fine-textured groundcovers. At maturity, the plant spreads to less than 10 inches (25 cm) across, making it an excellent candidate for container culture. It pairs effectively with miniature ferns, small sedges, or other dwarf perennials that share similar moisture and light requirements.

Care Notes

'Asahi Comet' performs best in moist, well-drained soil and partial to full shade, with consistent watering during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
