Overview
Registered in 2009 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Serendipity', 'Arlene Mae Savory' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its reverse-variegated foliage: a pure white leaf center framed by a flat, medium blue-green margin of approximately 0.4 inches (1.0 cm) in width. The leaves are ovate with rounded bases, lightly cupped and folded, with a dull surface above and below, and exhibit very good contrast between the white center and blue-green edge due to heavy substance.
In the Garden
'Arlene Mae Savory' reaches a mature height of 8 inches (20.3 cm) with a spread of 15 inches (38.1 cm), forming a compact, mound-like clump at a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials in rock gardens, troughs, or the front of borders. Its small stature also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While heavy substance offers some resistance, slug and deer damage may still occur and should be monitored.
