Overview
Registered in 2005, 'Arkansas Lad' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage (pollen parent unrecorded) derived from *Hosta* 'Breeder's Choice'. It is visually distinguished by its blue-green leaves with a non-fading white margin, a dull upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath, which together produce a muted, two-toned effect.
In the Garden
'Arkansas Lad' forms a mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 72 inches (182.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its large, ovate leaves with cordate bases and slightly rippled white margins make it a substantial specimen for the middle to back of a shaded border. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, astilbes, and shade-tolerant groundcovers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and use barriers or controls as needed.
