Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Halo', 'Archangel' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, golden yellow margins. The broadly ovate, lightly corrugated foliage reaches 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) in length and 7 inches (17.8 cm) in width, with a dull upper surface and a thin glaucous bloom beneath. The leaf margins are flat and golden yellow, while the scapes rise 18 to 30 inches (45.7 to 76.2 cm) and are gold in color.
In the Garden
'Archangel' forms a dense, fast-growing mound 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall and 57 inches (144.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in partial to full shade. Its gold-margined leaves provide contrast when paired with green or chartreuse hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* and *Tiarella*. The plant's substantial spread requires ample spacing to accommodate its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Archangel' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
