Overview
Registered in 2016 as a sport of unknown origin, *Hosta* 'Applique' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its thick, leathery leaves with creamy white margins and pronounced white striping that extends through the petiole. The ovate, medium-green leaves (14.6 cm long, 7.0 cm wide) bear 5 to 6 vein pairs and display creamy white mottling and stripes along a 0.6 cm wide, flat, creamy white margin, with a slightly shiny upper and lower surface.
In the Garden
'Applique' forms a compact, slow-growing mound 22.9 cm (9 in) tall and 40.6 cm (16 in) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegation remains stable, and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in garden settings.
