Overview

Registered in 2009 by Japanese breeder K. Muroya, 'Aomori Setting Sun' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its variegated foliage of medium green margins with a lighter center. The leaves are ovate with rounded bases, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, featuring 9 to 10 pairs of veins; the upper surface is slightly shiny while the underside is very shiny.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate rate of expansion. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland gardens, though it is not typically recommended for container culture due to its medium stature.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
