Overview
Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Andrew Jackson' is a large, upright cultivar distinguished by intensely blue-green leaves with white margins, a heavily rippled and twisted appearance, and a prominent white line over each vein. The leaf blade is ovate with a rounded base, dull on both surfaces, and measures 12.75 inches (32.4 cm) long by 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) wide, with 17 vein pairs.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 53 inches (134.6 cm) and height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), 'Andrew Jackson' forms a substantial, upright clump suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its moderate growth rate and bold, folded foliage make it an effective contrast against finer-textured ferns or broad-leaved companions such as *Heuchera* or *Pulmonaria*. The bluish scapes, reaching 28 to 31 inches (71.1 to 78.7 cm), carry near-white flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
