Overview
Registered in 2014 by M. Zilis and K. Schwarz, *Hosta* 'Amigo' is a sport of *H.* 'Macarena' distinguished by its medium blue-green leaves with flat, golden yellow margins approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide. The ovate, moderately wavy leaves feature cordate bases and 11 vein pairs, creating a clear green-and-gold bicolor effect.
In the Garden
This medium-sized cultivar forms an upright, slow-growing clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers contrast well with the golden margins. Suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade perennials; its moderate size makes it appropriate for border fronts or woodland garden placements.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Amigo' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
