Year registered1996
Section classIII-2

Overview

Registered in 1996, 'Amethyst Blue' is a medium-sized hosta of hybrid origin, with *H. 'Sea Lotus Leaf'* as its pod parent. The cultivar is visually distinctive for its heavily glaucous, blue-green foliage that forms a dense, upright mound, combined with scapes that also bear a glaucous bloom.

In the Garden

' Amethyst Blue' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas. At maturity, it forms a clump approximately 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height, with a slow growth rate. Its medium size and upright habit make it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden; it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, but standard slug control measures may still be necessary in damp conditions.
