Overview
Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'American Pie' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from an open-pollinated cross of (*H.* 'Swoosh' × *H.* 'Green Fountain'). It is visually distinctive for its low, dense mound of ovate, intensely flat leaves that are light green with creamy white, flat margins 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) wide, and for its dull leaf surfaces both above and below.
In the Garden
'American Pie' forms a compact mound 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature sedges. Its small stature also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges, and monitor for slug and deer damage, which can affect the foliage.
