Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'American Masterpiece' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Northern Mist' that produces a medium-sized clump of intensely blue-green foliage with creamy white margins. The leaves are distinguished by their broad, slightly rippled margins and heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a slow-growing mound reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers retain their color and the white margins remain crisp. The 8-inch (20.3 cm) long by 7-inch (17.8 cm) wide leaves have cordate bases and 18 pairs of veins. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or woodland garden settings.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar exhibits typical slug resistance for a blue-leaved hosta, though deer may browse young foliage.
