Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Arrow' registered in 2008, 'American Gothic' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its subtle variegation, where medium green leaf centers are bordered by medium blue-green margins of 0.5 to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm) in width. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, bear a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and possess 9 to 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'American Gothic' forms a mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its blue-green foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant's medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many blue-leaved hostas, 'American Gothic' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management measures should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
