Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Paul's Glory' registered in 1999, 'American Glory Be' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaf centers with wide gold margins, a reversal of the typical gold-center, blue-green-margin pattern found in its parent. The leaves are heavily glaucous on both surfaces, contributing to a muted, powdery appearance.

In the Garden

'American Glory Be' forms a substantial mound 24 inches (61 cm) tall and 52 inches (132 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or for the middle to back of a shaded border. It performs best in partial to full shade with consistent moisture, and its large, bold leaves contrast well with finer-textured ferns or the upright foliage of *Iris* species. The green scapes, reaching 27 to 32 inches (69 to 81 cm), produce pale lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide regular water during dry periods, especially in full sun exposure, which may scorch the leaf margins. Fertilize in early spring as growth emerges; slug and deer damage is possible in typical hosta-growing zones.
