Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'American Green Angel', registered in 1999 by an unknown originator, 'American Dark Angel' is a giant, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: dark green margins frame a lighter leaf center. The leaves are substantial, reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in length and 11 inches (27.9 cm) in width, with 17 to 18 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'American Dark Angel' reaches a mature spread of 54 inches (137.2 cm) and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), forming a dense mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large, bold leaves make it a strong specimen or anchor plant in a woodland border. Pair with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture and color.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, but monitoring may still be necessary in damp conditions; deer are known to browse hostas.
