Overview

Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'American Choice' is a sport of *H.* 'Breeder's Choice' and forms a small, mound-like clump. It is visually distinctive for its medium green, ovate leaves with flat white margins of variable width (0.6 to 3.8 cm) and a very shiny underside.

In the Garden

This small hosta reaches approximately 58 inches (147 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (51 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated cultivars, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small woodland perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens, though it is not typically recommended for containers unless the container is large enough to accommodate its eventual spread.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent. The scape, which reaches 36 to 42 inches (91 to 107 cm) in height, may produce up to 50 pods, contributing to its ornamental interest after flowering.
