Overview

Registered in 1980 by McConnell and M. Seaver, this small hosta cultivar forms a tight mound of dark matt green leaves with white margins. The leaves measure 3 inches (7.6 cm) long by 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with four vein pairs, and the plant reaches 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height with a spread of 18 inches (45.7 cm).

In the Garden

Suitable for partial to full shade, 'Allan P. McConnell' is well-suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along paths due to its compact, dense habit. Its small size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants may include other small shade perennials such as heucheras, ferns, or miniature astilbes.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents. This cultivar performs reliably in typical hosta-growing zones.
