Year registered2007
Section classI-2

Overview

Registered in 2007, this giant blue-green hosta originated from a cross between *H. 'Blue Steel'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Blue Seer'* (pollen parent). 'Algonquin' is visually distinctive for its intensely corrugated, nearly round leaves with deeply puckered surfaces reaching 0.25 to 0.5 inches in depth, combined with a heavy glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces.

In the Garden

'Algonquin' forms a substantial mound 34 inches (86.4 cm) tall and 62 inches (157.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage maintains its color and the deep corrugation is most pronounced. The large, heavy-textured leaves make this cultivar suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in shaded borders, paired with ferns or fine-textured groundcovers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Algonquin' is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in typical hosta-growing zones.
