Overview
Registered in 2010 by Paul and Jean Ruh, *Hosta* 'Akane' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its ovate leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and satiny upper surfaces that contrast with very shiny undersides, and for its unusual flowers with burgundy red stripes and white edges.
In the Garden
'Akane' forms an upright clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded containers. Its medium size and upright habit allow it to pair well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
