Overview

Registered in 1990 by U. Syre-Herz, 'Ahwaneeh' is a large hosta derived from a cross between *Hosta montana* macrophylla (H. Krossa B3) and *Hosta kikutii*. It is visually distinctive for its green leaves that turn pale yellow (lutescent) with gold margins, and for its substantial size.

In the Garden

'Ahwaneeh' reaches a mature diameter of 25 inches (63.5 cm) and a height of 29 inches (73.7 cm), making it suitable as a mid-border or specimen plant in partial to full shade. Its large leaves, measuring 14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with 7 to 10 vein pairs and slight undulations along the margins, provide textural contrast alongside ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. It is not recommended for container cultivation due to its size.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil and water regularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as growth emerges; slug control may be necessary in damp conditions, though deer typically avoid hostas.
