Overview

Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Agawa' is a giant blue-green cultivar resulting from a selfed cross of *Hosta* 'Elegans'. It is distinguished by its exceptionally large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases, a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a compact mound-like habit that reaches 38 inches (96.5 cm) in height and 54 inches (137.2 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

'Agawa' performs well in full sun to partial shade, tolerating more sun than many blue-leaved hostas. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in borders and woodland gardens, where it pairs effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The green scapes, reaching 34 to 40 inches (86.4 to 101.6 cm), elevate the flowers above the foliage, providing good visual separation.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves show moderate resistance to slugs, though standard hosta pest management is recommended in typical hosta-growing zones.
