Overview
Registered in 2012 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Climax', *Hosta* 'Afterglow' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaf centers and exceptionally wide, flat gold margins. The leaves measure 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with 14 to 16 vein pairs and a moderately corrugated, lightly flat texture. The upper surface is dull, while the underside bears a glaucous bloom. The gold margin, ranging from 3 to 3.5 inches (7.6 to 8.9 cm) in width, is notably broader than that of many variegated hostas, creating a pronounced contrast against the medium green center.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Afterglow' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green centers retain their color and the gold margins do not scorch. The large, nearly round leaves with cordate bases form a dense, spreading mound that reaches 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It pairs well with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Astilbe*, where its broad, corrugated foliage provides structural contrast. The plant is suitable for large containers if given adequate root space and consistent moisture.
Care Notes
*Hosta* 'Afterglow' requires regular watering during dry periods, particularly in warmer climates, to maintain leaf turgor and prevent margin browning. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that may reduce blue-green coloration. Slugs and deer may feed on the foliage, and standard control measures should be employed where these pests are prevalent. Hardiness zones are typical for the genus, with the plant performing reliably in temperate regions.
