Overview
Registered in 2015 by an unknown breeder, 'Academy Soaring Rugosity' is a medium-sized variegated hosta notable for its intensely corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with medium green flat margins and a slightly shiny surface on both sides. The cultivar produces a vase-shaped, upright clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with medium green scapes 26 to 27 inches (66.0 to 68.6 cm) tall.
In the Garden
This hosta performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hosta-growing zones, where its pronounced rugosity and upright form are most visible. At maturity, it forms a substantial clump nearly 3.5 feet across, making it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders alongside ferns, heucheras, and other textural perennials. Its fast growth rate allows it to fill space quickly, though it is not recommended for container culture due to its medium size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, though the corrugated texture offers some resistance; deer are known to browse hostas and may target this cultivar.
