Overview
Registered in 2015, 'Academy Rumpled Beast' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, selected for its distinctive, untidy clump habit and intensely dark blue-green, heavily textured foliage. The leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, moderately cupped and lightly wavy, with slightly rippled margins and a pronounced corrugated surface that gives the plant its rumpled appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaf color remains most intense. At maturity, it forms a substantial clump reaching 54 inches (137.2 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, with an upright growth habit and fast growth rate. Its large, textured leaves make it a suitable specimen for woodland gardens or as a focal point in shade borders, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other fine-textured shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents in typical hosta-growing zones.
