Overview
Registered in 2003, 'Academy Palantir' is a large, fast-growing variegated hosta of unknown pollen parentage, arising from an F-1 seedling of *H. 'Ginko Craig'. It is visually distinctive for its upright, vigorous habit, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a very shiny underside, and notably spherical flower buds borne on exceptionally tall scapes.
In the Garden
'Academy Palantir' forms a substantial clump reaching 51 inches (129.5 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height, with an upright growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large, ovate leaves with lightly wavy margins provide strong textural contrast. This cultivar's tall scapes (42–44 inches / 106.7–111.8 cm) make it a suitable specimen for the middle to back of a shaded border, paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size precludes container use.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may feed on the foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
