Section classIII-1

Overview

Registered in 2003, 'Academy Mirkwood' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage, with a seedling of *Hosta* 'Ginko Craig' as its pod parent. It forms a flattened, dense mound of ovate, dull-surfaced leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, and is noted for producing numerous vertical scapes of lavender flowers.

In the Garden

'Academy Mirkwood' reaches approximately 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones. Its compact, flattened habit and muted leaf texture make it a useful groundcover or edging plant in shaded borders, and it pairs well with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its subdued foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
