Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Devon Mist' registered in 2000, 'Academy Mavrodaphne' is a small, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: dark green, slightly rippled leaf margins with a lighter center. The leaves are broadly ovate with rounded bases, measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, bearing nine pairs of veins. The leaf surfaces are slightly shiny on both sides.
In the Garden
'Academy Mavrodaphne' forms a compact mound reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small woodland perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or epimediums. Its fast growth rate allows it to fill in quickly in mass plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
