Overview

Registered in 2003, 'Academy Mallorn' is a large, variegated hosta cultivar derived from a self-pollinated seedling of *H.* 'Ginko Craig'. Its most distinctive features are the broadly ovate, medium green leaves with flat margins, a lightly cupped and corrugated texture, and a slight gloss on the upper surface contrasting with a very shiny underside.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a moderate-growing, slightly flattened mound reaching approximately 48 inches (122 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its substantial leaf size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The tall scapes, reaching 48 to 57 inches (122 to 145 cm), carry medium green flowers and add vertical interest. Companion plants such as ferns, astilbes, or heucheras complement its broad foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
