Overview
Registered in 1999 from unknown parentage, 'Academy Flora' is a small hosta distinguished by its variegated leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a dull upper surface contrasting with a very shiny underside. The mound-like plant reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) wide, featuring 6 to 7 vein pairs and a rounded base.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar is suited to partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and forms a moderate-growing mound that fits well in the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. Its small stature makes it appropriate for container cultivation, and it pairs effectively with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland species. The medium green scape rises 14 to 17 inches (35.6 to 43.2 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Academy Flora' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
