Overview

Registered in 2015, 'Tyler John' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its blue-green leaves with gold margins and a powdery blue spring coloration. The foliage exhibits streaking in blue, green, and yellow tones, with slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright, mounded clump reaching approximately 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height. Its ovate leaves, measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 5.25 inches (13.3 cm) wide, display 11 vein pairs and are moderately corrugated with light twisting, folding, and waviness. 'Tyler John' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar is noted as a good breeder for hybridization work. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended for hosta-growing zones.
