Overview

A 2012 sport of *Hosta* 'Red Cloud', 'Two if by Sea' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its ovate leaves with pure white centers and medium green, flat margins. The white leaf centers are broad, measuring 0.5 to 1 inch (1.3–2.5 cm) wide, and contrast sharply with the green borders, which are similarly wide. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with 6 to 8 vein pairs per leaf.

In the Garden

'Two if by Sea' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white leaf centers remain most stable and are less prone to scorching. The plant's moderate size and bold variegation make it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Two if by Sea' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
