Overview
Registered in 2009, 'Twisted Sister' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Polly Bishop' and *Hosta pycnophylla*. It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, blue-green leaves with heavy corrugation and pronounced contortion, forming a spreading, contorted mound.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and spreads to 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its heavy substance and rounded, highly textured leaves provide contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars. The scapes rise 18 to 20 inches (45.7 to 50.8 cm) above the foliage, bearing lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
'Twisted Sister' requires consistent moisture during establishment and benefits from a balanced fertilizer applied in early spring as new growth emerges. Its heavy leaf substance offers moderate resistance to slug damage, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions. Typical hosta-growing zones are appropriate for this cultivar.
