Overview
Registered in 1978 by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'True Blue' is a large cultivar derived from the cross of *H.* 'Chartreuse Wedge' and (*H. nigrescens* × *H.* 'Blue Vision'). It is visually distinguished by its blue-green foliage with blue margins, forming a substantial mound of heavily veined leaves.
In the Garden
'True Blue' reaches a mature spread of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in partially shaded borders. Its large, corrugated leaves with 16 vein pairs provide textural contrast alongside ferns, *Heuchera*, or other blue-leaved hostas. The scape height is variable, ranging from 40 inches (101.6 cm) to ground level, which may affect flower visibility.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. While typical of the genus, this cultivar may require protection from slugs and deer in shaded garden settings.
